Please review the Roland Boutique SE-02

The Roland Boutique SE-02 is a really cool little synth with three Voltage Controlled Oscillators (VCOs) that sounds just great, when you hear VCOs you then realize that there is a difference with DCOs (Digital Controlled analog Oscillators). With the SE-02 you can create very lush sounds even though this is monophonic synth, this is due to having three oscillators, two envelopes, and a very expressive filter.

The marriage of the analog oscillators, with a very comprehensive step sequencer in a small format and a low price make this synth an absolute bargain. Connect this to the K-25M keyboard (sold separately) and you got yourself a great sounding analog instrument in a small format. If we only had a wish it would be for the Boutique SE-02 to run on batteries, however we are not sure how VCOs stability and performance are affected by batteries. The other issue we have with this synth is that it only includes a single effect (delay), it would have been nice to have reverb and distortion as well. The delay effect sounds great especially when played with the sequencer and you had to choose a single effect that would be it.

Playing this synth is a lot of fun, it has many knobs to fiddle with that will put a big smile on your face, that being said it is limited to a single LFO, a single filter and a single effect, and that is reflected by the price.

SYNTHREV RATING: RECOMMENDED AND VERY INEXPENSIVE

PROs
- Awesome sounding synth
- Lots of knobs to tweak sound
